TYPES OF TAROT READING
There exist today various forms of tarot reading. Most people probably are only aware of one method, and do not know about the others that have been devised throughout the years. The three main forms that exist today are: divination, psychological, and mnemonic. There are also different schools of thought on how to interpret the images on the cards as well as different combinations of the images. Although no one is certain of when tarot originally was developed, the first deck was created in 15th century Italy. Since then it has been influenced by various pagan and occult practices and has become what it is known as today.
The divination method of tarot reading is the most well known and popular of the three methods. It's usually what comes to mind when people consider having their fortune read. This method of tarot card reading is derived from the fact that many people believe that the cards can be used to learn about their present and future by having their fortune read by a professional tarot card reader. There are different theories as to how the cards have the power to do this; among the new age movement, it is believed that the cards are influenced by a spiritual being, such as Gaia for example. There are also those that believe tarot cards work because they tap into the collective unconsciousness.
Another main method of tarot reading is the psychological method. This method was mostly created by psychological trailblazer Carl Jung who attached importance to the symbolism of tarot. He believed that tarot cards represented archetypes, or fundamental types of people that exist in the unconscious of all human beings. For an example, he saw the Emperor as a father figure, or head of a family. Jung used the tarot cards to ask people what they thought each card meant. By doing so, he could better delve into their mind and figure out more about them. Dr. Timothy Leary came up with some odd but interesting psychological interpretations of tarot cards himself.
The final of the three main methods of tarot reading is the mnemonic method. This method was created by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an occult group that was widely responsible for the growing popularity of tarot cards. They considered the tarot cards to be a textbook and mnemonic device for their teachings. They were responsible for naming the two parts of the tarot deck the 'arcana,' based on the Latin word for 'closed' and 'secret.' This group and their interpretations provided a fundamental influence on the development of tarot card reading.
Regardless of how tarot reading works or which method you use, it is an interesting art that many people enjoy and use in order to find out important things about themselves and the future. Each card has its own group of meanings and symbolism that have changed over the years. The cards come from a whole host of inspirations such as Egyptology, astrology, paganism, and the occult.
